Re: RIP Steve Irwin
Holy...
I was just going through some old videos and saw a trailer for his Croc Hunter movie from a few years ago. Always thought he'd either die relatively young like it turns out he did, or live a super-long life just because he could survive most anything. RIP.

Re: RIP Steve Irwin
Holy crap.
I'm totally stunned. I never really expected him to die, especially like this. He just... had that sense of invincibility about him.
He will be missed.

Feels kinda pointless since I don't actually do stuff at Gaia, so I'm putting it here.

Gah. I'll say the same as Alex. Very saddening.

Re: RIP Steve Irwin
Very shocking indeed. Heard it on the radio this afternoon on my way back from work. A terrible shame. As much fun as it was to make fun of the guy and stereotype him, he really was a genuinely nice guy and did a lot of great work for animals around the world.

It's very sad
The guy always was so energetic and cheerful, you don't see that in people often. Yes, I liked his show too. I will miss him.

Re: RIP Steve Irwin
he was a great personality, but it was somewhat expected that he would die a bit young. The sadest thing is thinking about his son, whom Steve brought into the croc pen. the litle guy is only about 2-3 years old now.
He stood tall on top of the mountain of his ancestors and looked down to see his home. He let loose a loud howl. He is now a man, but not just a man. He is now a true Wolf and others are sure to follow him.

I wasn't a big fan of him, but it's still sad news since he had a wife and kid who has to deal with this tragic event. Poor guy.

Re: RIP Steve Irwin
I was quite shocked when I heard; as Alex said, he really did have that air of invincibility. I suppose I half expected a croc might get him in the end but not something like a stingray. He may have taken some flak at times for his unconventional approach but he did more to raise the profile of conservation than any number of straightlaced doom-mongers. May his work live on.
There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning....
And that, I think, was the handle - that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave....
So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

Re: RIP Steve Irwin
I suppose the fact that he died because of a stingray wound, something that's happened to only one, maybe two other people in Australia's entire history, is somehow very fitting....after all, Irwin did seem pretty invincible and hard to imagine going out in any easy, normal way.
I'm going to miss those "crickey!"s.

Re: RIP Steve Irwin
Poor Steve... Even though his overly-hyper character could get annoying at times, Irwin was a great guy, and it's hard for me to believe he's gone... Good-hearted, energetic, dedicated; a sweet, restless child trapped in a buff man's body, God bless his cotton socks, may he rest in peace.
It was, indeed, a truly exotic death, worthy The Hunter. A death he himself would likely choose over succumbing to a slow, tormenting, pointless disease like lung cancer or Alzheimer's. Steve died doing what he loved best; 'twas the proper way to go, just a bit too early...
