The Simpsons & Futurama Fanworks Central

Anyone who's just watching for Simpsons-related content can skip the first ten minutes, as those are basically Seth and his writers whining and complaining about the internet social justice movement and Tumblr culture.

You can definitely tell this was written by Family Guy's phalanx of writers. For the most part they managed to keep the Simpsons characters in-character I can see what they were trying to do meta-wise, commenting on the nature of crossover episodes in general (and using Stewie to comment on said meta nature, which is one of his typical roles on the show) while trying to bow to the Simpsons' legendary context while noting FG's popularity while paying homage to The Flintstones for paving the way. There was a level of bowing and scraping towards the Simpsons from the FG writers that was kind of gross (no, I don't think Family Guy ripped off The Simpsons; if anything, they ripped off the general concept of the half-hour sitcom, which is a broad genre), and I could have done without Stewie torturing Nelson, the Brian/SLH fiasco and the body shaming from Lisa on Meg with the unnecessary cutting joke. And you could feel them running out of point and plot right at the half-hour line; and no, lampshading it in the writing doesn't work and isn't funny. And why did we need an extra ten minutes for that fight?

But overall it was...kind of amusing? Slightly better than I feared? A little better than the Panda rape episode/Saddlesore Galactica?

To break everything down by storyline:

Homer/Peter: Generally enjoyable and IC; them drinking gasoline and the car wash stuff was eyebrow-raising and pure FG BS. Goes off the rails with the whole Duff lawsuit thing, and the parody of the chicken fight felt unnecessary.

Marge/Lois: Surprisingly cute and inoffensive.

Nelson/Bart/Stewie: I could have lived without the rape joke, and Stewie torturing Nelson (the writers seem unaware of the fact that Nelson and Bart get along as often as Bart's his bullying victim). The storyline seems to be coming from some fanfic written in '92 when Nelson would send Bart rolling home in a trashcan. And then Stewie's obsession with Bart was...IC for him but felt ickier than it is in his home canon.

Brian/SLH: stupidly written and pointless. Family Guy: Forgetting everything they did in the classic seasons EST forever. BRIAN KNOWS NON-TALKING DOGS. HE'S EVEN CANONICALLY SLEPT WITH THEM.

Lisa/Meg: The bodyshaming from Lisa was OOC, but her jealousy over Meg was an established characteristic from episodes like Lisa's Rival, so I didn't find it too offensive. I loved that in the end they bonded.

* Yes Seth, I get it, boo social justice, boo blogger and Tumblr culture, people who want you to treat the Meg character like a human being, boo.

* Most of the time I find Stewie's meta commentary annoying as hell, but in this episode it actually works.

* ....So Lou couldn't get a date because he bashed his groin into a parking meter?

* Nice callback phone prank...until the rape joke. I get WHY it was there, but ugh.

* "You need to know that you matter!" Well, it was a nice moment while it lasted.

* And that Ralph line should have belonged to Rod or Tod.

* Pst, Family Guy writers: Your Bob's Burgers joke isn't funny anymore, since, y'know, it's now on before the Simpsons.

*...I think Homer and Peter drinking gasoline is officially the dumbest thing I've ever seen on either show.

* There were so many little jokes that fell flat, so when the big jokes worked, they worked.

* The one person who ships Homer and Peter must be thrilled.

* ...That one person is apparently Chief Wiggum.

* And it only took them a half-hour to horrify me. Nice...going, show?

* I want to see Cleveland and Carl running around having adventures.

* The James Woods joke was the best meta in the entire episode.

* And right on it with the Flintstones joke. I repeat: the James Woods joke was funnier.

* And a cutting joke. Glorious.

* Though wow, that was really nice, the idea of Meg and Lisa being friends. It didn't need the injection from Peter because the writers have a boner for mocking Meg, tho.

* That Stewie and Bart storyline. Wow.

* And they wrapped everything up ten minutes early so they could have a Peter/Homer chicken fight. Wow.

* "Duff is more experimental than any partner I've ever known."

* "I think I speak for all of us when I say: I am over The Simpsons."

* "You strangle your son?! That's insane!"

* Annd I think Homer just killed Sherri. Or Terri.

* "TV violence is fine! if you don't show a nipple!"

* The Roger cameo was funny at least? Kind of?

* "We're gonna make it!" "Trust me, we're not."

* Ladies and gentlemen: Homer just bit Peter Griffin on the groin. This happened. We let it happen.

* And now they effectively called Brooklyn Nine Nine a pile of garbage.

* Least. Funny. Comic Book Guy Joke. Ever.

* This is going to launch a wave of Stewie/Bart shippers, isn't it?

EDIT: I'm still somewhat horrified that they actually had a joke that involved Homer shoving a gas pump nozzle up his rear end.

The rip-off part in the courtroom was my favorite part.

Since they destroyed half of Springfield during that fight, I'm pretty sure it's just Family Guy style WACKINESS, and everyone will be fine on tonight'e ep.

I don't forgive them for that gas pump bit tho.
