My feelings on Futurama expressed through the medium of song

Post by c_nordlander » Fri Nov 14, 2014 9:00 pm

I've realised that there are a few people who don't agree with my, ahem, rather strong opinions on post-cancellation Futurama, so I decided to put them in a dumb filk song to make them clearer even to myself. The song in question is Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know, and I freely admit that I stole the idea from Teddiefilm's parody The Star Wars That I Used To Know (though I've tried not to rip it off, except for the refrain).

If you think I'm way wrong, feel free to tell me in no uncertain terms!

EDIT: In the second verse, I'm using proposition 8 as an example of topical stuff that is stupid to put in Futurama. Please don't take it as a condemnation of same-sex marriage. :)

Now and then I think of when I watched this series
Like the time I laughed so hard that I could die
Then Fox cut it off right in its prime
Till it came back after a long, long time
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of snarking
Like what we did to OFF back in the day.
But it required nothing but my hate
When it made fun of Proposition 8
And I admit that I was glad when it was over.

But you didn't have to dumb it down!
Make it out that Leela's sad because a singing butt-boil
And I don't even use iPhone
You treat it like it's Colbert and I feel forlorn.
No you didn't have to stoop so low!
Making jokes about "Da Vinci Code" and same-sex marriage
I guess you really need that dough
What happened to the F'rama that I used to know?

[Comedy Central execs sing]
"Now and then I think of when we made this series
We made some jokes about Obama, that's no crime.
Some satire has been addressed
You say this makes you so depressed
Perhaps then you should let it go
And try to be less hung-up on the F'rama that you used to know!"

But you didn't have to dumb it down!
Having Leela raping Zapp, and making fun of Birthers
And does Al Gore pay for your heroin?
You treat it like it's South Park, and it feels so mean.
No, you didn't have to stoop so low!
Having Amy dumped by Kif and then re-marry off-screen
I guess I'm really whining, though.
What happened to the F'rama that I used to know?
Pretty little baby
Pretty little monster
Went to the good school
Left with honours
Brand new tycoon
Sitting with a harpoon

FILK! Filk's been such a lost art. Nice to see you revive it!!

This is fun and feels on-metre, too.
