Bongo Submissions

Post by Dean Rankine » Sat Apr 23, 2011 3:03 am

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I've just started drawing Simpsons comics and submitting them to Bongo for their consideration. I haven't heard anything back yet. But here's hoping :bart:

Thanks. I recognize I've got a ways to go. I've ordered one of those 'How to Draw Simpsons' book. Which I hope will help with getting the core structure right.

If it's the Simpsons Handbook, it will, believe me.

Kinda wish they'd so a second volume or something covering more of the recurring characters, though.

Having more of those model sheets around would be handy. It's a very easy style to ape but a hard one to really master. I gave up and just went with an approximation in the end.

I love your own style here. Sometimes Bongo introduces alternative styles to the comics, though it's quite rare for obvious reasons. I hope they do take you on: anything is better than mike kazaleh.

I like these drawings just the way they are. Use the Simps handbook for some reference but try not to change this style much. It's a stand out.

I like the style, too. Though there are some European-isms you may want to look at changing ("Kilos," for example). The Snowball one is cute!

Thanks very much, guys. And thanks for pointing out the 'kilo' line (My Australianisms were creeping through there :)).

Here's a new Itchy and Scratchy comic I'm going to submit.

Somewhat belated review, sorry. Also, welcome to the forum. I'm Chris.

The first comics: wow, this is a very unique style. It felt a bit grotesque at first, and I can imagine it's a love-it-or-hate-it thing, but it grew on me, and now I like it a lot. Reminds me of some edgy Scandinavian newspaper comic (maybe you have other inspirations entirely, but that was my first impression.)

The Itchy & Scratchy comic: proof that you can do Simpsons style as well (maybe not quite on-model, but it's close). Again, impressive, even if it made me a bit sick to my stomach. :) (Just like real I&S!)

Writing- and plot-wise, the first two comics are pretty funny, if nothing incredibly memorable. The first one feels a bit verbose, but then, that's how Apu talks. The third one is a great example of an I&S episode.

Excellent work. I don't read the Bongo comics, so I have no input as to whether you should go for more Simpsons style or stick to your own style. But you've shown you can do both, which is great.

Always nice to see really talented people around!

Hey Chris,

Thanks for the great feedback. I'm operating on the assumption that the people at Bongo would want a style that is pretty uniform to the animated characters we know and love. So I've been attempting to modify my own style (which is much more loose and edgy) to fit in. Here's my latest attempt (after buying a how-to-draw Simpsons book).

Lotta fun stuff here. How long was it since you sent them? I emailed Bongo some of my work six months ago and never heard a word.

Did you get hired by Bongo, Dean?

Gee, I wonder when Bongo decided to change their minds about working with people who don't live in the US.

I did get some work. Which I'm extremely thankful for. I've got a couple of pages in Simpsons Comics issue #180. Which I think is on the stands in the U.S as we speak. :bart:
