The Weekly Simpsons Watch (next up, Venture!)
Something we've been talking about, now official...
The Simpworks rewatch of The Simpsons
You know, it's been too long since some of us have actually watched old episodes of The Simpsons, so here's the plan
Each Saturday, come into chat for 9PM GMT. We'll watch an episode a week, starting with Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire this week, Saturday the 4th of July. Afterwards, chat about it, maybe post reviews here!
Although we'll be simultaneously watching the show, this will not be a stream. You'll have to have your own DVDs or access to streaming the episode yourself!
Hope I'll see you guys there!

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone’s fault. If it was Us, what did that make Me? After all, I’m one of Us. I must be. I’ve certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We’re always one of Us. It’s Them that do bad things. - Jingo, Terry Pratchett

I shall be there!
Our choicest plans have fallen through, our airiest castles tumbled over, because of lines we neatly drew and later neatly stumbled over.

This should be good, maybe even get a few people interested in fanworks again or something!
Either way, happy thread #1000!

Hopefully I'll have a functioning comp at home by the time you reach season 4. Hope you all have a good time!

Re: The Weekly Simpsons Watch
I just realised I scheduled this for the same day as the biggest American holiday available. Welp.

Eh, I'm a Brit so I'm still game.
(I might try and make it a challenge or something to doodle something from each ep watched)

Re: The Weekly Simpsons Watch
Well that was awesome. We watched Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire and Bart the Genius. Both were quite excellent.
One thing that did stick with me was the show's ability to be touching, especially in the Bart the Genius scenes where he bonded with Homer. It was real nice to witness.

Mmmhm! I think a lot of people deride S1/2 due to not being so funny but really, I find enough genuine interactions to make up for it.
I'll put up one sketch per ep when the second is done...

Heck, I'm sorry I missed out on this. Will try to be around for at least one of these sometime!

Welp, sketches done for 1&2! I uh, kinda bungled up a lot on S102...

Re: The Weekly Simpsons Watch
Oh, crap, I thought this was going to be today. Turns out I had other appointments for last night, and I got lost in the dates. Anyway, I'm glad this happened, and I'm looking forwards to the next one!
That is true. This hits me every time I watch one of those old episodes: the relationships between the characters are very real and tangible and it's very easy to care about them, even in the first season among the "crudity" it became infamous for.gkscotty wrote:One thing that did stick with me was the show's ability to be touching, especially in the Bart the Genius scenes where he bonded with Homer. Agreed! It might be since they weren't really going for laugh-a-minute like even a lot of later 'classsics' (ymmv on what counts as classic) so they really had a bit more room to be genuine about it. When I saw Bart Gets an F again I found myself oddly impressed at the dialogue between Bart and Otto, it just felt so... cute even.SirMustapha wrote:Oh, crap, I thought this was going to be today. It's also a good way of seeing characters in some rather odd lights, like Todd Flanders being a somewhat normal boy and Principal Skinner was actually feared by the students.
Think one of the comedic highlights from those two eps was probably Martin and Bart's face off, hence why I chose that subject for a doodle. 3
