504 gateways and such
These bad gateway errors have been annoying, haven't they? I've put in a bit of a temporary fix for this (increased a timeout), so hopefully they'll go away. I believe there's some problem in phpbb's code causing it. The forum's due an update anyway, so maybe that will splat it permanently.

Great, thanks Graham!
It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone’s fault. If it was Us, what did that make Me? After all, I’m one of Us. I must be. I’ve certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We’re always one of Us. Ok, so, apparently the people that wrote my server management software decided it would be hilarious to make the upgrade from php 5 to php 7 as obnoxious as possible, but I have finally got around to doing it. The flip-side of that obnoxiousness is that I can run different domains on different versions of PHP with relative ease now. Regardless, the slow-downs and timeouts should be a thing of the past.
