Spoiler I was surprised this wasn't a Selman-run episode.
I really dug the pseudo-format-bending of treating this like an episode of a Flanders show. It took twenty years, but a child of Flanders finally had a crisis of faith. I never thought I'd say this, but Todd was great here. His frustration and inner turmoil were the backbone of the episode. (They could have done an extra scene or two on Ned's side, though, building up to him heading to Moe's.) The Simpsons actually worked as side characters here, each trying their own way to help Todd. (Certain...continuity issues do irk me a fair bit, though the eventual payoff was heartwarming.) The climax was properly thematic: Todd's faith was shattered by losing one parent and restored by getting to keep the other one. Nicely done.

Spoiler Coming right after my new most hated episode of all time I expected some of that to transfer here. (Also, Selman's overrated)
BOY HOWDY DID I HATE THIS. Nah, actually the opposite, it's the most enjoyable the show has been in YEARS! It falls a bit short of perfect thanks to Ned, who honestly wasn't very likeable here but then we get Maude taken as something other than a punchline, some actually thoughtful writing and an excellent use out of Todd who's usually jut "Short Rod" (or is Rod "Tall Todd"?). The closure with Mona and Maude at the end was heart-punching in all the right ways.
But more than anything? It was hilarious . Kearney's beliefs about projections, omnicient Todd, Bart's riddles, the "Keep the boy on leash" sign, Todd's comeback against Lisa and Moleman's revenge were all golden but the highlight? Most definitely Jessica's absolute disaster of a ballet recital!
It went from the most miserable experience I've ever had watching to the most fun I've had in years all in the span of two episodes!
