Chris' scraps and bits

Post by c_nordlander » Sun Jun 04, 2017 11:14 am

A thread for my shorter works, so I won't clutter up the board with separate threads.

To start with, a text adventure: Dead Meat in the Pit. Not as scary as the title makes it out to be: in fact, there's no objectionable content.

You play as a poor youth finally leaving your home to see the world. As you meet other characters, you will get new phrases to use in conversation. Can be solved entirely by using compass directions and the TALK command.

I made the entire game (writing and coding) in just one hour for a game jam. Accordingly, it's rough around the edges, but has no game-breaking bugs. Also, multiple endings.

Hints for getting the endings:
Spoiler
Pretty little baby
Pretty little monster
Went to the good school
Left with honours
Brand new tycoon
Sitting with a harpoon

-- Mother Mother, "Business Man"

Got both endings, after some drustration.

I think the main problem I had was that there's nothing to say I can skip the TALK command and just type in a number. So the farmers kept beating me up after i tried to TALK.

An interesting mechanic though!

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone’s fault. If it was Us, what did that make Me? After all, I’m one of Us. I must be. I’ve certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We’re always one of Us. It’s Them that do bad things. - Jingo, Terry Pratchett

Heh, thanks a lot for playing! I'll gladly admit that it's rough around the edges, and I probably need to fix the problem you pointed out, since that's not something I wanted. (Obviously, time was an issue, so I didn't get around to playing through it very much.)

I am happy with the "conversation-driven game" concept, it feels fairly original.

EDIT: Fixed it now. Thanks, Steve, for finding the bug.

A very short horror story. Didn't post it in the drabble thread, because it doesn't actually reach the length requirement of a drabble.

"Is it gone now?"

"Don't panic. We couldn't get it out."

"But you can't leave it in there!"

Thought I might as well put my translations here as well. This one is into Swedish and... we don't actually have any other Swedish-speakers in here, do we? Anyway, putting it here just for posterity.

So: Swedish translation of the song The Future Is Coming Today from the Back to the Future PC game. Always loved how hopeful this song is.

Idag!

The Passage. Short hypertext story made for a game jam where the theme was to make something based on a work of art. Based on Thomas Cole's 1842 painting cycle The Voyage of Life, which can be found here. An allegory of the human life as a river journey.

Really short and not a game in any sense, but I'm pretty pleased with the writing.
