Excellent descriptiveness and realism on both of them.

More on the surreal side, this time around.

---

“Do dead people get a discount?”
“… I’m sorry?”
“Do I get a discount for this? I’m dead.”
“You’re not dead, sir.”
“Yes, I’m dead. I’m very much dead, on the inside. No will to live, no motivation, no heart, no soul, stuck on a dead end job, no love, no family, no dreams left. Nothing. I’m a moving shadow, a crawling corpse. I shouldn’t even have to pay for this.”
“How can you prove you’re dead?”
“Here, touch my hand. Feel how cold it is.”
“Your hand is warm, sir.”
“… oh, god! You’re even deader than I am!”

The ending line is absolutely hilarious. Great job telling a story in few words, exactly what this thread is about.

Know No Fear
I slept alone in the rented room, curtains open.
I don’t know whether it was a dream, or whether I had woken in that confusion where you barely know where you are. I saw the bedroom, but there was a monster in it, so large it covered the far wall. I saw the lighter spots of eyes. They were as long as my arm.
I couldn’t remember the city lights or the shadows cast by the heavy leafage outside. I looked at it, and realised I had no fear left.
I watched it until it was shadows again.

Dang, Chris, just when I think you have topped yourself... That may be my favourite among your drabbles here. A chilly story with a masterful atmosphere, and for me, personally, a shining example of using the short length as an advantage.

Wow, high praise! On the downside, my ears are burning now.

EDIT: Though if you asked me to choose the drabble I'm most proud of, it would probably be The Boon.

Aw! I guess I'll steal your thunder to stop the burning, then!

It may be kinda cliché, but a chat with friends at the pub last night inspired this.

----

My dad dragged me there. He insisted it had to be that day, I was getting old. The music, the booze, the sleaze, the aggression.
I chose one lady and he took me to her. White blouse, short shorts, teacher-like glasses, hair tied back, like a walking fetish. I can’t deny she was beautiful.
We went into the room. She noticed how angry I was. All we did was chat about art, society, the universe. We laughed a lot.
She told my dad the deed was done. I have no idea how much it cost. I never saw her again.

I don't think it's that cliché! Also, it's really well-written. Thank you; I enjoyed it.

One of the creepiest, followed by one of the funniest, things I've read in a while. :)

Beauty and horror. The horror is inspired by real events. The beauty, not so much...

January 29th (scene from a possible novel)

We were chatting when the winds started. I told her to stay overnight, and soon the lights went out. We went to bed in the dark as the winds howled and the windows rattled. I heard roof tiles being torn away, and held her close. The rain was loud as if it were happening inside. I saw her face by the light of the constant thunderbolts. She told me to stay calm. I imagined my apartment flooded by rain, showered with glass shards from the windows. I cried.
I wasn’t in love with her, but, god, I wish I was.

That's really beautifully written, especially the realistic description of the sound of the rain. Nice subtle twist at the end.

EDIT: Never mind, fixed now.

Since we're getting close to Hallowe'en, a creepy little drabble. Vaguely inspired by a couple of Swedish folk tales about the Devil riding around to collect the souls of the damned.

The Wild Hunt

Mistress Beata crossed the court with the Devil. His skin was pulled a little too tight over his face-bones.

The sleigh stood ready. Another woman and a man waited inside. Neither looked at her. They set off.

They were going to reach a fiery hole in the street.

The runners bumped over flesh and bones. A man clung to the door. She recognised her servant. His fingers were twisted into insectile hooks. He held on a while.

She still could not see the pit. Something clambered up the other side.

The sleigh turned. She still could not see it.
