Oh hey look at that, it's a Steve birthday apparently!

Normally I'm a bit lax on these things but I feel like I should say something this time. Steve is probably the closest friend I've got and definitely the longest I've had here. You've been through some tough times, but you've done amazing things over the years even if you don't always see it. You are kindhearted, generous and willing to go the extra mile for your friends and even the odd stranger. You put up with everything we throw at you and keep going. You should be proud of what you've done, and you should be proud of who you are.

Happy birthday to Steve, who remains a kind and decent man despite many years on the internet. I will eat a lot of cake in your honour. (I think that's how it works).

Happy birthday!

And Steve, you are indeed as awesome as Graham said. The fact that you put up with me says it all.

I'm... not sure how to respond.

Thank you very much. You guys mean a lot to me, and I'm genuinely touched.

Happy birthday Steve!
There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning....
And that, I think, was the handle - that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave....
So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

A belated happy birthday to Steve, additional echoes to all comments, and also a happy birthday to Fernie if he still shows up around here. :)

Many happy returns to Steve (who I missed yesterday - for shame!) and also Fernie. Y'all go do something fun you otherwise wouldn't!
