I don't think there's a pair of episodes in season 1 that more clearly illustrate how much Homer's characterisation would change by the end of even season 2.
It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone’s fault. If it was Us, what did that make Me? If anything, it's hilarious in hindsight seeing Homer getting mad at Marge for getting drunk at an important event!
Looking at Homer's Odessy, it's a little strange how the main plot kinda came in close to the halfway point. Almost wonder if it was originally meant to be two stories (Bart's field trip/Homer's unemployment) that they didn't really know how to make a full length episode of so they mashed both plots together?

May, these are extremely good! The characters look very on-model, though you've made drunk Marge look a bit old (I think it's the mouth).

As for the past few episodes, which I forgot to comment on...
Bart the General - good but not one of my favourites. Lots of good comedy though, especially once Abe and Herman get involved.
Moaning Lisa - a rare thing, an episode of a TV show that shows depression that just happened, without any particular inciting incident or reason. Made me wish that Bleeding Gums Murphy had showed up a whole lot more, he was cool. Also I found it funny that while the lady was berating Homer for spending all day playing Video Boxing, the EVO fighting game championships were going on in real life.
The Call of the Simpsons - Brilliant, just brilliant. I love Bob's RVs and his hard sell, the camping trip, the rabbit, and the bigfoot ending, especially the spinning newspapers. To be fair nothing that happened here was the RVs fault.
The Telltale Head - Another good, not amazing, Bart episode. It's an excellent introduction of the bullies too.
