A Very Venture Drabble Thread

Post by missy_misery » Sat Dec 23, 2006 7:07 pm

Since I've had this snipette sitting on my hard drive for the last eon or so:

Dean/Triana, PG-ish:

"That's a lovely frock."

Triana looked down at herself -- her purple raccoon coat and it's tiny plastic black buttons hadn't somehow warped her backwards into the eighteen hundreds.  "Thanks," she said lazily.

The redheaded boy next to her doubled his stride, breath puffing out in white gasps, his head a teakettle at boiling point.  She braced herself for the eventual story -- how he and his father and brother had saved some brave mermaid from the jaws of near doom and her coat looked just like her breastplate when her toe caught a crack in the pavement.

His arms were like reeds around her waist, managing to keep her suspended between a manhole and the pavement.  Between the blue and the gray she remembered why she liked hanging out with Dean Venture - all the other boys she went to school with couldn't care less about the big hero move.  And, surrounded by heroes as she was, there was something endearing about Dean.

Her feet hit the ground comfortably.  Impulsively, she reached out and pressed her lips to his -- not even minding that he tasted a bit like milk.

"Thanks," she smiled.

He smiled back, an unpolished mirror.  A look of alarm crossed his face and suddenly she was held at arm's length.

"Stand back, m'lady!  My pants are haunted!"

END

...Feel free to post your own pieces!

Hahahah @ my pants are haunted.
I would like to see Triana give Dean a pity kiss (or a normal one!) in season 3.

Excellent idea for a thread! Hopefully this one will see a lot of action (just like Dean's pants). And your story is hilarious and spot-on in every way I can think of.

Here's one of my own, written while I cooked the Christmas rice porridge, and explaining why one of my favourite character wasn't present at a very momentous occasion. WARNING: major spoilers for "Love Bheits" and "Showdown at Cremation Creek: Part 1".

"Schadenfreude"
by Christina Nordlander Dawson

The Monarch marries today.

I am watching the nuptials on the guestroom widescreen, for all the obvious reasons. I feel happy for them - or, at least, feel that happiness is expected of me. The Monarch did not bother to slip an invite under my door. Who knows? It could be consideration.

Yes, I am bitter. Dr. Venture has robbed me of everything: my lower jaw, my country, my people. Yet, watching the gingham-festooned proceedings downstairs, my foremost thought is this: he robbed me of my bride.

Discord? Confusion? "I will destroy your ridiculous cocoon. And all inside."

Now this is a feeling I know.

Chris - your drabble's positively excellent!!  I was wondering where Der Baron had gone to during TM's wedding, in any case - a brilliant fill-in!

And thank you so much for your FB to my Dean/Triana piece!

Might as well post all my Venture drabbles here and keep this thing alive. Post your own as well!

Note: none of these drabbles are pornographic or graphically gory, but I've put content warnings on a few that have content that might be unpleasant, or that aren't something you'd want your boss to see.

Fly Like the Batman

I had to struggle against the wind to get to the edge of the roof, but its strength could only be good for my flight.

The compound ground on that side is just a plain lawn. I couldn't gauge the drop until I spotted Dean.

The umbrella handle got slick from my sweat. That was Dad's black umbrella. You know, I never saw it after that.

I flicked it open. Hopefully Dean saw.

The last thing I heard was things snapping. Not my bones, fortunately, the umbrella.

But it must have been a dream. You can't always fly in dreams.

Late Game Night

The lit bunk lamps form a cavern of light around them.

"The dying dragonfly wounded Gorthunk the barbarian in..." the dice clatter, "the head, for eight points."

"Lesser Heal on Gorthunk."

Werner flashes Rusty his broad smile and snaps his fingers for the Manservant to top up the peanut rings.

"Joh-Nar's spell succeeded."

"My thief uses his Sense Danger to scout ahead in the corridor."

"You sense great danger in the lower tunnel. It sounds like... metal, like a machine moving with a purpose."

Mike stretches for the snack bowl, and the questers thrill despite themselves and head onward.

From Thembria with Love

I didn't cry at the funeral. Or at the reception, when I had to tell his old man that I was his closest friend. I'm pretty sure, he didn't really have a life outside the Cocoon. And the pills stopped the nightmares.

Then I watched my TailSpin DVDs and...

"Is Thembria Soviet or Germany?"

"Dude, they're Germany! They're frickin' pigs!"

"What the hell have pigs got to do with Germany?"

"They're wild boars! They have those spiky helmets. Think Bismarck!"

"Their women wear Russian dresses."

"Prussia."

Perhaps it's always going to be there.

Assassin drabbles

Abbaye de Ste. Anne, off the Riviera, France

He flicks his pager shut with a small, expensive click and reclines in the deck-chair, closing his eyes against the glare on the sea.

The Brock Samson. Everyone knows the stories. He considers it a useful rule of thumb that only one third of the stories are true, but even that makes for an impressive track record.

Oh, he wants them to be true. The man is as close to a superhero -a messed-up, New Wave superhero- as he is likely to meet.

Perhaps, this time, he will take trophies.

~

Lake Vänern, Sweden

The stillness around the boat is so total, when his cellphone beeps, it is like waking from a dream. He opens it with his free hand.

At least he gets to return to the US of A. It's been a while. And the prize offered will pay for a few weeks on the deep, deep lakes of New England with their pelts of forest on every side.

First things first.

The float dips. He swings the rod, sending the long green pike twitching and spinning, and jams his fingers into its gills, cracking its head backward.

~

London, United Kingdom

The hotel suite is run-down, but when he is shining his guns, he can disregard his surroundings.

His phone rings.

Once he gets an assignment, his body goes into a new mode. Sight intensifies into touch, touch borders on taste. He slams his knuckles into the wall, leaving bloody prints on the cluttered flower-pattern. Pain becomes so much stronger, and no longer unpleasant.

It feels so good, he wants to take his rifle and go to the window. Not any more. The build-up will make it so much more glorious.

He hopes it will hurt.

A Boy and His Dog (PG for drugs, domestic abuse, the Groovy Gang)

While Patty, one eye puffy, takes his carrier bags of scavenged nibbles to the motel kitchenette, Ted stubs his joint and glares.

"What the fuck is that?"

"Zoiks, Ted, it's a pooch. He followed me back from the dump."

Sonny doesn't add "can we keep him, please?". The little guy doesn't shun him, like most people. Except his Gang, of course.

"Hmm." A random light arises in Ted's eyes. "It might be a sign from God. Yes! God used you as His unworthy tool."

The dog turns his grizzled-streaked muzzle to Sonny.

"Make him suffer the most."

Mother (About Dr. Quymn's childhood. PG for non-graphic sexual themes.)

Tara skipped up the path to Gentleman Grange, even though she was too old to skip, backpack slung over one shoulder, fingers pinching the certificate.

Mother was back from her Tokyo assignment, finally. Tara wasn't going to bother showing it to Horace. When he wasn't on adventures with Rusty's father, he just brought home boys and was sarcastic.

Mother's bedroom door was closed.

"Mother, I got a premium for the biology paper and..."

Ugly, squelchy noises. Oh gosh, I should leave. Darkness, like her eyes had stopped working. When she could see, Horace was there, and Doctor Edwards.

The Big Day (About the Manservant)

He unfolds from his unpadded box by his Master's bed and pads down to the kitchen.

While poaching vulture eggs, he notices the calendar. 9th of June. That means... yes. Nobody's celebrated his birthday since the army took him from his family, and then the old Baron picked him as a Manservant for his son in America.

He's been thirty-seven for two days, and the Master hasn't ordered his execution. He could just have forgotten, but maybe not.

When he picks up the breakfast tray, his shoulders are hurting again, but his steps are a bit lighter.

Son of Fantômas (About Phantom Limb's childhood)

Mrs. Shetterly had left him the book to brush up on his French.

Fantômas fired his grappling-gun into the air, catching one of the gilt ornaments lining the Dôme des Invalides. Before the astonished eyes of the gendarmes, he rose into the night air, the tails of his coat flapping behind him like the wings of Satan himself when he roams the night.

His arms trembled too much to hold the book. He swiveled the electric wheelchair toward the window, so he could catch the sunlight. Other kids were clambering in the apple tree in the garden next door.

Careers in Henching (Set after "Shadowman 9: In the Cradle of Destiny")

Phantom Limb is killing people. He was never friendly, but since his mistress left him, he's been like "you have failed me for the last time" twice a week.

He's been too subdued and boring to target, but no-one asks where anyone is. It's like in that talking rabbits book.

Even being on welfare has got to be better than working for a jealous zap-happy madman. The only thing keeping him is, if he leaves, Phantom Limb might realise he was with 9... ouch.

The note in his locker is signed with a primitive butterfly.

Eternal Vigilance (About Sgt. Hatred. Warning: contains references to paedophilia and child pornography)

It's getting on toward eleven, and the rest of the Compound is asleep. The ventilation system hisses above him.

Now he could enjoy the pictures. He's taken them all off his computer, but he knows where to find more. They're just cartoons anyway, not real boys. Blushy, nubby cartoons. Some are almost art, almost nonsexual.

And the imageboard comes up with a content warning. Someone on the Internet is vigilant. He's almost ecstatic.

He goes back to the Compound defense plan design. He'll keep fighting it, but he will have to fight it all his life.

New Toy (About Augustus St. Cloud and his decision to start arching Billy Quizboy. Refers to events in Season 5, but no real spoilers.)

Pei Wai takes his coat. Augustus reclines into the couch in his marble-sleek rotunda, extending his cigarette holder.

"Light."

He twirls the holder into his other hand.

"Whiskey."

Liquid smoke pools in the cut crystal.

When did he honestly last think about Quizboy? Five years ago? Ten? He has seen him a couple times at engineering conventions, wrangling with the doormen to let him in.

Crushing him might be entertaining, but the man lives in a trailer. What could Augustus do to him that life has not already?

He glances up. The sky is still bright.

"Give me the Guild."

Seas Would Rise When I Gave the Word (Set after the episode "O.S.I. Love You" and contains spoilers)

She hurt me, so I shouldn't be feeling bad about this. And yet, all I remember when I think about her is her strong clutch around my shoulders and her scents when I pressed her to my mouth: chrome and galvanized steel. The same flavours as when you run until you taste blood.

I could rip apart security doors. I could do all that and do it effortlessly.

It wasn't enough that she broke my body. She was destroyed. Shredded.

I will never have that power again.

Destiny.

Euphoria (My personal fanon about Herr Trigger's backstory and what caused his little... quirk. Contains creepy content.)

Before his imprisonment, Heinrich hadn't felt that way about guns. They were tools. He used them a lot. The younger him had been oddly innocent.

One target had trapped him and decided to have fun. Then empty time began. His actions or desires made no difference, so he stopped remembering. The blinds in the attic room were always down.

The memory cleared on the day when he got one hand free and twisted the gun out of the old man's hand. When he drew the blinds, there was a blazing lake of red, and the sunlight was sickly glorious.

I Hurt Myself Today (About Dean. Warning: self-harm. Kind of set off by the scene in "Venture Libre" where Sgt. Hatred thinks that Dean has been cutting himself; my idea was that Dean might have been cutting in order to see whether he was different from regular people.)

I'd read enough about it, but I wasn't prepared for how much it hurt when I finally put the bread-knife to the inside of my arm. Just pricking it wasn't bad, but cutting was this disgusting feeling on the surface of my skin. I stopped after one.

The blood didn't look different from anyone else's. I tugged at the skin, trying to look inside. There was just red. I hurt like a human.

I snuck off to the bathroom to pick up bandages before Pop noticed. Whatever was wrong with me still didn't show.

One about what Dr. Orpheus' childhood might have been like. Got the idea while baking. Busy hands are the Devil's playthings.

Not really relevant, but the present-day section is meant to be after the Orpheus family moved into the Compound, but before Triana went to stay with her mother.

Raising
The planets are aligned: his daughter's birthday falls on a Sunday, and Pumpkin never rises before ten on weekends. Time enough to get into the sun-bright kitchen, roll up his floor-length sleeves, sift flour...

He is standing on a chair so he can see the bubbles forming on the dissolved Lehman Brothers yeast in the bowl.

“Life! Give my creature life!”

Dad grabs his button-down collar.

“Don't waste your time on that pansy stuff, Byron. Don't you have physics homework that needs doing?”

He blinks. The cupcakes are almost ready, so he shakes his sleeves out.

“Rise! Rise!"

Another one! This one is set in my Raven Must Die/Seven Days to the Wolves continuity, but has no real spoilers. (Also, I'm not sure whether the event in this drabble is canonically part of that storyline, or is an AU.)

Triana, a sorceress since several decades, finally faces the choice every necromancer will face, sooner or later.

The title is a line from Robert Frost's poem "The Witch of Coös".

There's Something the Dead Are Keeping Back
After the funeral, Triana left the two Triad members in the yellow kitchen light. There was no closet on Dad's bedroom's south wall. A fuse box, though. She opened it and crawled into the glare.

A shadow-draped form waited. Triana saw her own face, youthful. But she was older now and didn't scream.

“Master. I have come for... for Byron Orpheus.”

If he'd died a natural death, perhaps, she wouldn't have.

“There is a price, I know...”

Her face grinned back.

“The price,” the Master said, “is knowing you didn't do it for the others.”

Oof, feelings. And Triana would undoubtedly go back and pay that price. She loves him in spite of the closet, in spite of everything.

I'm happy you liked it. It was hard to get the amount of feeling I wanted into just a hundred words, and I'm still not sure it's a success. Still, it was worth it for that last line.

I'm sure you noticed that (spoilers for "Raven Must Die")

That warms my heart! Sadly, I don't have anything else in the pipeline for that continuity for the time being (I did have an unrelated futurefic idea about Hank, but it involved the Sovereign in an important role, which is inappropriate for... at least two reasons now). But who knows how that might change in the future?
