How do you hold the pencil?

Post by Binky » Wed Aug 10, 2005 5:34 am

So I'm curious, how do people here hold a pencil when drawing? I use this method, which I assume is probably the most common:

Though I didn't draw it very precisely.

I grab the pencil with 3 fingers and the thumb, the same way as your but 2 more fingers around it and closer to the the tip, like surrounding the whole pencil, then the pinky one on the paper.  I had draw like that since I can remember.   People sometimes laugh at me when they are watching while I'm working, :-[  'cause it looks so funny.  ;D  Anyway, I think we all have a unique way to draw, after all is the result that counts.

can't be bothered with actually drawin it, but here's a photo. Dont think i always keep it like this though, most of the times it's in a fist stabbing at my own eyeballs.

Ha, that's genius! why didn't I think of taking a picture? I guess I just felt like drawing something at the time. Here's a more accurate representation:

Cute. I hold mine the same way.

For horizontal and curved lines - same as Binky's pic.

For verticals and diagonals, I use a different method (see my craptacular sketch!) It's quite fatiguing, but gives a good line :-\

See, for lines in different directions, I'll usually just rotate the paper. That's one of the reasons why Wacoms aren't for me. Nice sketch there btw.

I see i hold the pencil in a very werid way if compared to you guys, and i never thought about that "double handling" that Orange Go.. i mean, Box showed there. Maybe it's why i have to put my wrist under running cold water after a hour or two of intense drawing?

I should try and change my posture.

Yeah, posture certainly helps. That's the only problem I've found with a wacom, I can't sit properly. You can't really put it on a drawing table. At the moment I've got it to one side of the keyboard, which really screws up my arm if I stay at it too long. I should move it more to the middle.

I hold mine like the most people do.
