Does anybody actually read their spam these days?

Post by gkscotty » Thu Dec 07, 2006 11:01 pm

This landed in my mailbox today, and for some reason I actually read it. I'm glad I did, because it was utterly hilarious.

What utterly pointless levels will people go to to get around spam filters? Just how self-defeating is this?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone’s fault. If it was Us, what did that make Me? After all, I’m one of Us. I must be. I’ve certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We’re always one of Us. It’s Them that do bad things. - Jingo, Terry Pratchett

I think I shall start compiling all my spam in to a book. It's bound to win the Nobel Prize for literature.

It's a great story.  I give it an A- for creativity.  I think Ross should get Joey and Monica to help him fight the zombies.

Ah!  The good old stock market manipulation scam!  That's quite a fine example, the one's I get are never as long as that...  What gets me is that presumably people are still falling for this stuff, either that or the spammers haven't realised that they're not.
There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning....
And that, I think, was the handle - that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave....
So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

Hmm, it mentions some Germans, so can I assume it's addressed to me?! And now, should I wish to see Britney's underpants? Or watch Baywatch instead (not so much because of David Hasselhoff, but sweet Caroline Holden)? Anyway, I don't have stocks, but now I really need to buy an iPod, so I can try out that iTrip thingy soon. Mission accomplished?  8)

Bwah - I drown in spam like this every day in multiple accounts of mine.  I noticed that they're striving for coherence now more lately - one contained a ton of C&P from a message board posting about some controversial storyline on a soap opera, then the stock market spam gif, then a bunch of extra gibberish.

David Hasselhof is the antichrist anyway. ;D

This reminds me of that randomly generated science paper that was submitted to some high profile institution... And accepted.

It reminds me of every paper I wrote for the Media Analysis portion of my BSc. As long as I used big words and certain key phrases (extra points if you can insert the phrase "vagina dentata"), I could write just about any old twaddle and get an A. And I did. Steve will be able to back me up on this one. :)

I've had competitions with people on that basis during my defence writing courses this year. At the ebginning of each term we all wrote three or four daft words, put them in a pot, then drew out a selection random ones. The winner was the person who could include the most within their work. It was amazing how many you could actually get in...

I think I have a paper I wrote on The Simpsons in my first year lying about somewhere...

A lot of that spam is getting through my filters these days. I'll have to see if there's an update for spamassassin. Blegh.
