It's got to be 3!
There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning....
And that, I think, was the handle - that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave....
So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

I'm going to have to say 3 as well.

Saying two just to be contrary.

And also because I'd like to see what happens.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone’s fault. If it was Us, what did that make Me? After all, I’m one of Us. I must be. I’ve certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We’re always one of Us. I'd like to see 2 as well, because I'm in the mood for physical violence humor.

3 is the clear winner. Anyone want to post the next part?

Also a bit long. Apologies, I couldn't find a good place to stop it sooner.

--------------------------------------------------------------

"And team Amazonia are victorious!" the television blared. The crowd hooted their approval. Scruffy was inclined to agree, if for no other reason than the bikinis only came in one size.

At that moment he was interrupted by a beeping from the AutoJan 3000 round his wrist. He flicked on the holographic screen, and scrolled down the projected 3D graphs, showing boiler temperature, number of biscuits left on the shelf in his broom closet, and various other pieces of information of use primarily to a janitor. One at the bottom was flashing amber, so he zoomed in.

Uh-oh. That could be trouble.

Real trouble.

Big trouble. He'd best be doing something about that.

"And their challenger, Schrodinger's Catgirls, from the planet Nivena!" The announcer all but screamed into the microphone. Scruffy paused.

...but not imminent trouble. That would have been a red warning rather than amber. And this was one of his favourite teams, on account of being allowed twice as many players. Sure, at any given time 50% of them were dead, but if you looked away then back again you could change which ones. Which meant twice as many jugs.

"The players are all in place, and Daniela is winding up to serve for team Schrodinger, and - oh, the Amazonians have chosen now to deploy their catnip spray, dousing their opponents thoroughly! And would you look at that! Oh the humanity! If you're thinking of getting up or changing the channel, it makes you less of a man!"

Scruffy was a man. A man of priorities at that. He settled back down on the couch. There was plenty of time yet to deal with the other thing.

*  *  *

"Morris," Munda hissed. "Morris!"

"What, what?" Morris asked from below her on the ladder.

"Well don't just stand there. Head down and see who it is!"

"Oh I see." he replied, in mock irritation. "We all talk about gender equality, but when push comes to shove, is always the man risking his neck, isn't it?"

"Well until you think of a way for me to climb down through you, yes, it is. Now hurry up and get down there!"

Morris sighed, and clambered down the ladder, Munda following close behind. They regrouped at the bottom. The sewer was dark, save for the next tunnel on their right, from which the strange glow continued to emanate. Whatever it was seemed to be singing.

"...If I were a rich man. Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum..."

"Well?" Munda said, giving Morris a small shove forward. Morris frowned, and started onwards. he then stopped, took off his shoe, and hefted it up over his head like a club. Suitably armed, he continued forward, stopping just at the turning point of the tunnel. After a couple of deep breaths he sprang round, shoe raised.

"Ha!"

"Blaagh!" The glowing thing dropped the tattered old umbrella it had been twirling and leaped back a pace. Munda looked round the corner. Then smiled, recognition dawning in her eyes.

"Why look Morris! It's only Doctor Zoidberg. Remember honey, that nice single doctor Leela brought round to dinner one time."

"Oh yeah," Morris said, lowering his shoe. He extended a hand. Zoidberg edged forward, clearly worried it might be a trick. When Morris didn't strike him, he inspected Morris's outstretched hand forwards and back for food, then decided to shake it. The pulsating glow, which had sped up after Morris jumped out, slowed down again.

"How's it going." Morris said, letting go. He didn't like the way Zoidberg's eyes were fixed almost hungrily on his shoe, and decided to put it back on. "Say, I didn't know you could glow," trying to make smalltalk.

Zoidberg shook himself and looked away from the shoe. "Oh this? I believe in cultivating a broad variety of talents," he said, waving his claw in what he hoped was a sophisticated manner. "It never does to specialise too far - or else pow! Some day a fishing vessel will come along and scoop up all the shrimp you've spent eons adapting to eat. And what have you then? Bupkiss!"

Morris laughed as he stood up. "Tell me about it. We mutants rarely suffer from evolutionary dead ends though. Something always washes up. Speaking of which, given your glowing talents, i don't suppose you could walk with us back home? We know the way, but it's nice to be able to see where your putting your feet down here."

"I'm sure we could rustle up something to eat while you're there," Munda chimed in. "Who knows, maybe Leela will pop round and you two can get a bit of time together."

Zoidberg glowed a bit brighter, and the woms became more frequent.

"A free snack you say? I am at your service!" he exclaimed, raising his right claw dramatically to the sky. If the sky were visible down here.

"Snack smack," Munda replied. " You may as well just join us for dinner."

Zoidberg gasped. The woms and glowing became more rapid still. Finally, that fortune cookie which had promised him riches was kicking in! First free goo, and now a free dinner.

"Well sounds good to me," Morris said with a shrug. "Always happy to have company." He paused and looked at Zoidberg inquisitively. "Say, what does an educated man like yourself know about whales?"

They were having whale!? Zoidberg closed his eyes and all but shuddered with anticipation. The woms rose in pitch and frequency, and the flashing matched it, becoming a definite light source as opposed to a faint glow.

"It's just, we had one wash up in our pond, and were... that is..." Morris and Munda both backed away, as the purple glow seemed to coalesce and take physical shape around the crustacean. Light shone out in piercing beams, like some nuclear disco ball which had reached critical mass. Morris took Munda's tentacle and she leaned on him, struggling to stay up against the strong current of air which had sprung up seemed to be circling Zoidberg, lifting him off the ground. He span with it, growing faster and faster. Morris and Munda turned and tried to flee, but it was like walking into a hurricane. They could at best stand up.

And then all at once the air and light seemed to be sucked back into Zoidberg, all but lifting the mutants off their feet, and there was a horrible moment of silence and utter darkness, the split second of calm after a star collapses but before it can explode outwards, ending when all of a sudden-

Option A: Hermes finds a small clerical error.
Option B: The catgirls deploy their own secret weapon.
Option C: We rejoin the hypnotoad show!

Totally A. LOL @ Schroedinger's Catgirls, and yay for Zoidberg's adaptability and continued use of wom.
